Occupational Therapy: Because life is a “job”

Occupational therapy is something many people have heard of, but are never quite sure how to define what exactly it is. Despite popular misconceptions, occupational therapy is not about helping you find a job, or preparing for a job. The only job that OT’s help with is the ‘job of living life’.

The most important goal of occupational therapy is to enable people of all ages to participate in everyday activities, known as “occupations” in the OT world (hence the “job” misconception), that give meaning and purpose to their lives. Occupational therapists are skilled at analysing activities and environments, and modifying them so that an individual can achieve to their best ability. Occupational therapist’s also assist in remediating or developing a person’s skills, helping people to live life to the fullest.

At Nurture Family Allied Health Centre, we can provide support in a wide range of areas across the lifespan, and address a range of functional skills that are important for everyday life. We can provide comprehensive assessments and personalised therapy for both children and adults to support their individual goals in all areas of daily life. We work in schools, homes and facilities, and work closely with other professionals who may be involved in your or your child’s care to provide holistic, consistent care strategies.

We are particularly passionate about helping children to reach their pOTential, building foundations for a bright future at Nurture. Children’s “occupations” are centred around play, development and learning. We work with children with any condition or difficulty, that affects their ability to perform their everyday activities of life. Our therapy strategies are creative, teaching children so that they remember, and involving them so that they learn.

A few of the things that we do at Nurture include:

  • Help children achieve their developmental milestones such as fine motor skills, gross motor skills and coordination to help with play, schooling or independent skills (e.g throwing a ball, getting dressed, holding a pencil or utensil)

  • Help children with developmental delays or who have difficulty learning everyday tasks (such as bathing, getting dressed, brushing their teeth, feeding themselves, eating, going to the toilet independently, sleep routines)

  • Help children who have learning difficulties or are struggling at school improve their academic skills (e.g. reading, writing, spelling, organisation, attention, listening, transition planning, preparation for schooling, visual skills, executive functioning skills)

  • Help children who have unique sensory processing patterns to develop strategies to help them manage their differences and reduce the impact of sensory processing difficulties on their everyday life (eg. provide targeted activities to reduce sensitivities, tools for parents and teachers to support children across their environments, find solutions to challenges being experienced, recommend tools that can assist with sensory processing difficulties)

  • Help children with behavioural issues maintain positive behaviours in all environments, including managing emotional regulation, social skills and play skills (e.g., instead of hitting others or acting out, using positive ways to deal with anger, such as writing about feelings or participating in a physical activity, using visual schedules to assist with following instructions and routines)

  • Evaluate a child's need for assistive technology, equipment and specialised devices to assist in adapting the way that they complete some of their everyday tasks

  • We also provide the following broad services to people of all ages and abilities: Health Promotion & Education, Liaising with community services, Task modification, Equipment and assistive device prescription, Home assessments, Functional assessments, Mobility assessments, Home safety / Falls prevention, Workplace assessments, Return to work programs, Pain Management


Over the holidays, we will be running some small group programs. Each program includes 5 x 60 minute group sessions (max. 4 children per group), which will be run over 5 days, by our occupational therapists. This program is suitable for children starting Prep in 2018 and focus’ on developing foundational skills needed to participate in Prep, including: attention and concentration (sitting still, listening) gross motor skills, fine motor skills (pencil grasp, scissor skills, drawing, name-writing), academic skills (alphabet, sounds, rhyming), social skills (sharing, turn-taking, making friends), trialling adaptive equipment that may be useful in the classroom (air cushions, weighted blankets, pencil grips, visual schedules etc.)

Write Magic

This program is suitable for children aged 4-7 years, and will focus on developing all of the components of handwriting, including: Fine motor skills, pencil grasp, pencil control and pressure, arm control, coordination, letter formation, line placement, spacing and legibility. Handwriting can be a boring task for some children, so in this group their handwriting skills will be developed using a multi sensory approach, with a touch of magic to keep them interested!

Mixed EmOTions

This group focus’ on teaching foundational self-regulation skills for children who have trouble with their emotions, or have difficulty calming down, and is suitable for children aged 5-8 years. During this program children will learn calming strategies, improve their ability to identify their emotions and triggers, manage their feelings and trial a range of strategies to help with calming down. The Zones of Regulation program concepts will be incorporated in this group.

The groups will be held during the two weeks between the 8th and 19th of January 2018 (exact dates TBA). These dates don’t suit? No problem. Contact us about arranging an individual holiday intensive program at times that are convenient to you.
