What is a psychologist?

A psychologist is an expert in human behaviour, having studied for a number of years in the areas of memory, learning, human development and the processes determining how people think, feel, behave and react. They use psychological interventions which have been rigorously tested for efficacy, in order to support individuals, couples and families overcome a range of problems and mental health conditions.

These interventions mostly come under the umbrella term of ‘talk therapies’, where a client and a psychologist will discuss the clients’ current issues and explore them in great detail. In this process the client and psychologist are working as a team, to discover insights as to how the issues came to develop, what factors are maintaining the issues, how best to overcome them and how to prevent them in the future.

Psychologists can assist in a wide range of areas, from treating mental illnesses, mood disorders and traumatic life events, all the way through to couples therapy and enhancing performance in work/study/sport.

If you are interested in seeking out the services of a psychologist, it is recommended that you first consult with your regular GP. They will often know local psychologists who will suit your needs and may develop a mental health care plan with you. With a mental health care plan you may be eligible for a medicare rebate when you visit your psychologist.
